Swapping "Should" for "Could"

Swapping "Should" for "Could"

Hello very much everyone 💚

For some of us, our 'to-do' list can start to feel like a heavy backpack weighing us down. I know, for myself, that little internal voice can get quite loud, telling us all the things "I should" be doing, achieving, or catching up on.

I wanted to share a gentle tool I’ve been using. Try replacing 'I should...' with 'I could, but right now I need to...'

Replace “I should...”.png

It’s a tiny shift, but it changes the narrative from pressure to permission. It reminds us that we are allowed to check our gauges and choose where our energy goes. Choosing your pace is an act of bravery.

How are you tracking today? Is there an 'I should' that you’re giving yourself permission to let go of today? 💚

Thank you for this resource. It is a timely reminder.

I'm finding much humor around me today.

And I for one am sick and tired of being should upon.

My Little 'let go' today was taking a sick day from work.

It is actually a big day for the organisation today with already one person down. But after going to an early meeting, not work related, determined that I was not in a condition to work so went home instead of to work.

I would generate gone in and done my best to stay afloat, with a hang on until the weekend approach.

Team response to my notification I will be late, may not make it, was stay home and rest, 'we got this'

My usual approach is to push through until I completely fall in a heap. (Slow learner lol).

Haha, I absolutely love that! 'Being should upon' is such a perfect way to describe that heavy feeling 💚

Here’s to a 'should-free' Tuesday afternoon. What’s one thing you’re doing for yourself today purely because you want to, rather than because you should? 💚

Taking a sick day when you know you’re not in a condition to work is such a brave way to swap an 'I should push through' for an 'I need to rest.' It’s so easy to fall into that 'hang on until the weekend' trap, but as you’ve shown, checking in with yourself early can save you from that 'heap' later on 💚

It’s also so heartening to hear that your team had your back with that 'we got this' message. It sounds like you’ve built a really supportive environment around you, and allowing them to step up is a gift to both them and yourself!

I hope you can really lean into that 'should-free' rest this afternoon. There are no 'slow learners' here, just people becoming experts at their own needs 💚

You caught me out. 😂

I don't abide by the premise of your question and have structured my life accordingly.

I'm at the mercy of the winds.

I could mow the lawn 🙂

Thanks @MatchaToad

I really am blessed to be in the work team that I am in. It is only a new job I started at the end of last year. Being such a good team makes it harder to take time out, by not wanting to let the team down. But it is good to know I can do that.

Haha, checkmate!

I love the idea of being ' at the mercy of the winds', there is a real freedom in just letting the breeze take the lead sometimes, rather than trying to steer the whole ship. It sounds like you’ve built a pretty sturdy shelter if you can just sit back and watch the weather roll by!

And look, if the winds are blowing you toward the lawnmower, I hope it’s a peaceful lap or two. But if they blow you toward the kettle or a comfy chair instead... well, the wind knows best, doesn't it, haha.

Here’s to a 'should-free' afternoon of following the breeze! 💚

It is such a massive relief to find a good fit with a new team, isn't it?

That feeling of not wanting to let them down is a beautiful reflection of how much you value them. But it’s also the very reason why taking today off is so important. By resting now, you’re making sure you can show up as your best self for that great team in the long run.

Knowing you can take that time off, especially in a relatively new role, is a huge milestone. It builds a foundation of trust that goes both ways.

I hope you get plenty of rest 💚

Here's to fair winds and following seas.
